Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on 12 August asked a Tarrant County district court to hold former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke in contempt for allegedly violating a temporary restraining order that barred him and his political group, Powered by People, from raising money for Democratic state lawmakers who fled Texas during a redistricting standoff. Paxton’s filing accuses O’Rourke of soliciting donations through ActBlue and at an in-person event in Fort Worth on 10 August, one day after Judge Megan Fahey issued the order. The attorney general is seeking to confine O’Rourke for up to six months or fine him $500, and is also asking the court to revoke Powered by People’s nonprofit registration. The contempt motion is part of broader legal efforts by Paxton and Republican leaders to compel the return of more than 40 House Democrats who traveled to Illinois and California to deny the chamber a quorum. A hearing date has not yet been set.
