Sen. Adam Schiff said the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s recent search of former national security adviser John Bolton’s home and office amounted to political payback ordered by President Donald Trump. Speaking in multiple broadcast interviews on Sunday, the California Democrat described the operation, which reportedly sought classified material, as part of a broader effort to intimidate outspoken critics of the president. Schiff, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, argued that the Bolton action fits a pattern in which the administration enlists federal law-enforcement powers against political opponents. He cited Mr. Trump’s televised threat to direct a new investigation into former New Jersey governor Chris Christie after Christie faulted the president’s handling of the raid. The senator also rejected separate mortgage-fraud allegations leveled against him, calling them “manufactured” charges intended to silence dissent. “Mortgage is their new weapon to go after their critics,” Schiff said, warning that other detractors could face similar tactics.
