Adam Schiff directed Democratic staff on the House Intelligence Committee to leak classified material in late-2016 to advance claims of Russian interference in the presidential election and damage then-President-elect Donald Trump. According to the documents, released this week to Congress, the whistleblower said Schiff told colleagues the selective disclosures could help spur an indictment of Trump. The witness described the plan as “unethical” and “illegal,” but was reassured by others in the meeting that they would not be caught. Publication of the FBI files has prompted conservative media outlets, including Fox News, and several Republican lawmakers to call for Schiff’s immediate resignation from the Senate. Schiff has not yet responded publicly to the allegations. Congressional committees are reviewing the material to determine whether further investigation or disciplinary action is warranted.
