Early reviews of Nintendo Co.’s Switch 2, which reached stores on 5 June, broadly applaud the hybrid console’s leap in processing power and its ability to upscale games to 4K when docked. A new Nvidia-based T239 chip, 12 GB of LPDDR5X memory and DLSS upscaling deliver markedly higher frame rates than the 2017 model, while a 7.9-inch display increases screen real estate. Critics at Digital Foundry, Eurogamer and other outlets, however, fault the LCD panel’s 420-nit brightness and pronounced motion blur, saying image quality lags behind the Switch OLED screen and that advertised HDR and variable-refresh-rate features are largely ineffective. Battery life is also shorter—Nintendo cites as little as two hours under heavy load. Price is another flashpoint. The console retails for €469 in Europe and about R$4,500 in Brazil—roughly 40 % above the original Switch’s 2017 debut price. At Nintendo’s annual shareholder meeting, President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged the higher cost could deter younger players and said the company would “monitor the extent of the obstacle,” fuelling local reports that an initial price cut could come sooner than Nintendo’s usual mid-cycle discount. Demand nonetheless appears brisk. French tech site Clubic cites internal data indicating 3.5 million units sold in the first four days, although Nintendo has not provided official figures. A separate social-media post that claimed five-million-unit sales in a month was later dismissed as erroneous by analysts tracking channel data. Nintendo is using events such as this week’s Japan Expo in Paris to keep momentum high, offering hands-on sessions and a pop-up store ahead of the 17 July launch of Donkey Kong Bananza, one of several exclusives positioned to widen the Switch 2’s software line-up.
