Rubio Says Trump-Putin Alaska Talks Bring No Cease-Fire or Nuclear Deal

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the weekend summit in Alaska between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin produced no cease-fire for Ukraine and did not touch on nuclear arms, countering speculation that a breakthrough had been imminent. Rubio told Fox Business that “99% of the talks were about the war,” but stressed that any settlement would require Kyiv’s participation. “We never said there was going to be a deal coming out of the meeting because the Ukrainians were not there,” he said, adding that the conflict “is a war between two countries; it’s not America’s.” The secretary argued that Trump remains uniquely positioned to draw Putin into substantive negotiations, but offered no timeline for next steps. He reiterated that the United States is not itself at war with Russia and gave no indication of changes to existing U.S. support for Ukraine.
