A woman died Wednesday morning after she was struck by a U.S. Postal Service van in Kensington, Maryland, Montgomery County police said. The collision occurred about 10:40 a.m. as the vehicle exited a Mobil gas station at Connecticut Avenue and Plyers Mill Road and hit the pedestrian walking across the driveway apron. Witnesses told investigators that bystanders from a nearby fire station used a car jack to lift the van and free the victim, who was pinned beneath the vehicle. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released her name. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the Montgomery County Police Department’s collision reconstruction unit. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has opened a parallel inquiry. Police said the death brings the county’s traffic fatalities this year to 19, seven of which have involved pedestrians.
