A 77-year-old man from Vermont was struck and killed on Sunday afternoon while attempting to remove a turtle from the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Indian River County, Florida, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Investigators said the pedestrian entered the roadway near Sebastian Boulevard at about 4:20 p.m. A 2020 Mazda CX-9 driven by a 44-year-old woman from Miami slowed to avoid him, but a 2020 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck driven by a 53-year-old Port St. Lucie man failed to brake in time. The pickup rear-ended the Mazda, pushing it off the highway and through a fence, then continued forward and struck the Vermont man, who died at the scene. The Mazda’s driver, her 49-year-old passenger and the pickup driver were not injured. The collision triggered a multi-hour closure of I-95’s southbound lanes while troopers documented the scene. Authorities have not released the victim’s name, and it remains unclear what became of the turtle.
