Alibaba has released Wan 2.2, an open-source text- and image-to-video model that the company says matches the quality of proprietary systems such as Google’s Veo 2 and Kling 2.0. The system, published under the permissive Apache 2.0 licence, contains 27 billion parameters with 14 billion active and allows granular control over lighting, colour and camera movement. Cloud AI marketplace Replicate immediately made Wan 2.2 available to developers, charging $0.05 for 480p clips and $0.10 for 720p output. Replicate also launched a faster edition of MiniMax’s Hailuo 02 that renders 6- and 10-second videos at 512p for $0.10, underscoring the rapid drop in the cost of synthetic video generation. The wider ecosystem is moving just as quickly. Platform provider Fal incorporated the new Hailuo 02 Fast model at the same 512p resolution and $0.10 price, while design service Freepik folded Wan 2.2 into its AI Suite. Independent reviewers report that Wan 2.2’s prompt fidelity already rivals leading closed-source systems in tests of facial expressions and motion coherence. The releases expand access to advanced video synthesis and intensify pressure on proprietary vendors. Free tools such as SkyReels V2, which offers unrestricted cinematic clips, are further lowering barriers for advertisers, filmmakers and game studios. Analysts expect the open-weights trend to accelerate, pushing prices down and innovation cycles faster across the generative-video market.
