Sen. Adam Schiff has created the “Senator Schiff Legal Defense Fund,” according to paperwork filed with the Internal Revenue Service dated Aug. 14. A spokesperson said the fund will finance legal costs as the California Democrat prepares for possible federal investigations championed by former President Donald Trump and his allies. Schiff, now in the Senate after years in the House, has long been a target of Trump’s ire for leading the first impeachment proceedings and for overseeing congressional probes into Russian election interference and the 2020 vote. “This fund will ensure he can fight back against these baseless smears while continuing to do his job,” spokesperson Marisol Samayoa said in a statement. The senator previously declined a pre-emptive pardon offered by President Joe Biden near the end of Biden’s term, saying it would set an unhealthy precedent. Schiff has not been charged with any wrongdoing, and neither Trump nor the current Justice Department has formally announced an inquiry.
