A magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck near the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, 5 August, shaking buildings across the country and sending residents into the streets. Local media said the tremor was widely felt, including in the capital, Santo Domingo. Seismologists also registered a magnitude-5.2 quake in roughly the same area earlier in the day. Authorities had not reported significant damage or casualties by late afternoon, but emergency teams were inspecting infrastructure and advising the public to remain alert. The day’s activity followed a smaller quake in neighbouring Haiti and underscores the seismic risk along the boundary between the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates that runs beneath the island of Hispaniola.

Stayying cooler this afternoon with temps only topping out in the upper 70s and lower 80s because of the clouds. Some of the cloud cover will start breaking up tonight, but overnight lows will stay a bit warmer in the 60s for most of us. https://t.co/Gc2ADimAqI
