A 25-year-old New York resident, Kevin Mares, was shot and killed in the predawn hours of Sunday while visiting Puerto Rico to attend Bad Bunny’s 30-date "No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí" concert residency, police said. According to a statement from homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz, the gunfire erupted at 4:13 a.m. inside the La Perla nightspot known as "Refuge for Mistreated Men" when an argument among several patrons escalated and one person opened fire. Mares, described as an innocent bystander, was struck in the abdomen and died at Puerto Rico’s largest public hospital. Two local siblings in their mid-40s were also wounded and remain hospitalized. Investigators have not identified a suspect or established a motive. Ruiz said Mares was travelling with three friends, all from New York, and that San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero has pledged to release security-camera footage to aid the inquiry. The killing occurred in La Perla, a seaside community on the edge of Old San Juan that has worked to shed a long-standing reputation for violent crime even as tourism surges. Puerto Rico has recorded 277 homicides so far this year, down from 325 in the same period of 2024.
