Washington — President Donald Trump is moving to end what he called “unlimited” U.S. taxpayer funding for Ukraine’s defense and to shift a larger share of Europe’s security costs onto NATO allies, according to comments made on 14 July by U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker. Whitaker told Fox News that, under a new agreement reached after a meeting in the Oval Office, Europe and Canada will pay for weapons supplied to Kyiv while the United States will focus on manufacturing the equipment. “We moved the burden off the American taxpayer for European defense and onto European taxpayers, where it should be,” he said, adding that Washington would still provide arms if Russian President Vladimir Putin “wants to continue to fight.” The remarks echo Trump’s long-standing complaint that the United States has subsidized both trade partners and military allies for decades. By insisting that European members bear the traditional costs of defending the continent, the administration is signaling a broader retrenchment of U.S. financial commitments abroad while maintaining its role as an arms producer.
