A U.S. Army sergeant wounded five fellow soldiers on Wednesday at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield in southeast Georgia, triggering an hour-long lockdown of the sprawling installation before he was arrested, base officials said. The gunman, identified as 28-year-old Sgt. Quornelius Radford, opened fire at about 10:56 a.m. local time inside the workplace of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, part of the 3rd Infantry Division. Soldiers nearby subdued him, and military police took him into custody at 11:35 a.m. All five victims were treated on site and transferred to medical facilities—three at Winn Army Community Hospital and two at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Brig. Gen. John Lubas said the soldiers are in stable condition and expected to recover. Radford used a personal handgun, according to Lubas. He is being held in pre-trial confinement under the Uniform Code of Military Justice while the Army Criminal Investigation Division, with assistance from the FBI, examines motive and how the weapon was brought onto the post. Fort Stewart ordered a base-wide lockdown at 11:04 a.m., lifted most restrictions at 12:10 p.m., and later declared the site secure. Nearby schools briefly instituted soft lockdowns. The White House and Pentagon said President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had been briefed on the incident.
