Savannah police say a gunfight between two groups erupted inside Oglethorpe Mall at about 5:41 p.m. Wednesday, leaving three people—two adults and a juvenile—with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Emergency crews also transported three other adults to hospital for medical complications arising during the evacuation. Police Chief Lenny Gunther told reporters the incident “was not a random act,” adding that investigators believe the participants knew one another. Detectives were interviewing those involved at hospital, but no arrests had been made by Thursday afternoon. Authorities said the mall was fully cleared and there was no ongoing threat to the public. SWAT officers methodically evacuated shoppers while fire and EMS units tended to victims. The mall remained closed overnight; employees were later allowed to retrieve belongings on Thursday. Mayor Van Johnson vowed that those responsible would be “held accountable to the fullest extent of the law” as local and state officials offered assistance in the continuing investigation.
