Two Tremonton-Garland police officers were shot and killed, and a Box Elder County sheriff’s deputy was wounded, after a man opened fire on officers responding to a domestic-disturbance call in Tremonton, Utah, late Sunday, authorities said. A police dog was also hit but is expected to recover. Investigators said the officers came under fire almost immediately on arrival, requested backup and then ceased radio communication. Bystanders eventually persuaded the gunman to lay down his weapon. SWAT teams secured the residence and confirmed there was no continuing threat to the public. The unnamed suspect was arrested without further incident and booked into the Box Elder County Jail on aggravated-murder and related charges. The wounded deputy was listed in fair condition on Monday. No civilians were hurt. Tremonton, a city of roughly 10,000 residents about 75 miles north of Salt Lake City, remained under an overnight shelter-in-place order while investigators processed the scene. Local and state authorities are assisting in the investigation, and officials said additional information on the officers and the suspect will be released after next-of-kin notifications are complete.
