The U.S. State Department has cleared two separate foreign-military-sale packages, the Pentagon said. The larger case would allow Egypt to buy National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and related equipment valued at roughly $4.67 billion, strengthening Cairo’s medium-range air-defense capabilities. In a second decision, the department approved an estimated $150 million deal for maintenance, repair and overhaul services for Ukraine’s M109 self-propelled howitzers. Kyiv has been using the artillery systems in its defense against Russia’s invasion. Congress has 30 days to review both notifications, which fall under the Foreign Military Sales program. Approval does not guarantee final contracts, but it signals Washington’s intent to continue supplying partners in the Middle East and Eastern Europe with U.S.-made defense technology.
