A man in his 30s was shot and seriously injured by Kent Police after a two-hour standoff near the Park Gate Inn in the village of Hollingbourne on Monday night. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said it has opened an investigation and sent investigators to the scene, describing the wounds as life-changing. Unarmed officers initially arrived at 7:15 p.m. BST to arrest the suspect on an outstanding assault warrant. When he refused to comply, armed units were deployed and found the man wearing a gas mask and body armour while brandishing a chainsaw and holding what officers believed could be a homemade firearm or improvised explosive device. Police fired two baton rounds that failed to subdue the suspect. According to preliminary watchdog findings, the man then moved toward officers, prompting an armed officer to discharge a conventional firearm shortly before 9 p.m. He was treated on site for arm and abdominal wounds before being transferred to a London hospital. An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in as a precaution and rendered the suspected device safe. Kent Police said the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related. A 100-metre cordon and the closure of the A20 remained in place Tuesday while forensic teams examined the area and the pub stayed shut.
