Two 16-year-old cousins who had been missing since Sunday afternoon were found dead on Monday in the Kosynthos River near Xanthi in northern Greece, authorities said. A passer-by discovered the teenagers in a watering hole along the popular “Monopati tis Zois” hiking trail and alerted police. Officers and a Fire Service rescue unit retrieved the bodies, which were taken to Xanthi General Hospital for autopsy. The Hellenic Police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of death; initial information points to drowning, but the exact circumstances remain unclear. The boys’ disappearance had prompted a missing-child alert by the NGO ‘Smile of the Child,’ and search operations had been under way since early Monday. Local officials said findings from the forensic examination will guide any further action.
