In early July 2025, large-scale Muharram processions were observed across Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi, with significant participation from the Shia Muslim community. In Srinagar, traditional Muharram processions, including those on Shikaras on Dal Lake, were conducted peacefully. Delhi Police made extensive security arrangements for the Muharram observances on July 6, deploying over 900 personnel in South Delhi alone and more than a thousand officials overall. Key locations for the processions included Jor Bagh and Shahdara, with around 31 programs in Shahdara district, 29 of which were processions. Security measures included deployment of company forces such as RAF and CRPF, drone surveillance, and coordination among multiple police ranks to ensure peaceful observance. Following Muharram, preparations intensified for the Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage starting in mid-July, with Uttar Pradesh and Delhi authorities mobilizing substantial police forces. Uttar Pradesh deployed personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary, Anti-Terrorist Squad, and Rapid Action Force along the pilgrimage routes. Districts such as Bareilly, Moradabad, Kurukshetra, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, and Hapur reported comprehensive arrangements including road repairs, CCTV installations, traffic diversions, and security committees to manage the expected influx of pilgrims. In Haridwar, around 7,000 police personnel were deployed, with monitoring via drones and CCTV to ensure smooth conduct. Delhi Police also implemented traffic precautions near Kanwariya camps, installing barricades, ropes, and caution tapes to protect devotees and minimize public inconvenience. These coordinated efforts reflect the authorities' focus on maintaining security and order during these significant religious events.
