Authorities in western Uttar Pradesh have ordered a week-long shutdown of educational institutions as large pilgrim processions pass through the region for the annual Kanwar Yatra during the Hindu month of Shravan. Meerut District Magistrate Dr. V.K. Singh said all schools and colleges—from primary level to universities—will remain closed from 16 to 23 July to ease traffic management and ensure student safety while thousands of Kanwariyas walk along key routes. Similar orders cover neighbouring districts, including Muzaffarnagar, Varanasi, Bareilly and Badaun, which have issued partial or full closures aligned with local pilgrimage peaks. In the National Capital Region, Delhi Police have announced restrictions on private and commercial vehicles at Kalindi Kunj and the adjoining Noida border until 23 July, citing the expected surge of devotees. Officials said detours and barricading would stay in place throughout the period to keep roads clear for the barefoot pilgrims and to prevent accidents.
