Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during her weekly public hearing, known as Jan Sunvai, at her residence in Civil Lines on August 20, 2025. The assailant, identified as Rajesh Khimji (also reported as Rajesh Sakariya) from Rajkot, Gujarat, reportedly slapped the CM, pulled her hair, and hurled abuses. Delhi Police apprehended the accused, who had conducted reconnaissance of the CM's residence for at least 24 hours prior to the attack, including filming and taking photos. The police have registered a case under section 109(1) BNS (attempt to murder) and taken Khimji into custody, placing him on a five-day police remand. The CM sustained injuries to her hand, shoulder, and back but was reported to be stable and recovering. Following the incident, additional security measures, including the deployment of CRPF personnel and repositioning of CCTV cameras, were implemented at the CM's residence. The attack drew widespread condemnation from political leaders across parties, including BJP, AAP, Congress, CPI, and Shiv Sena, who called for thorough investigations and emphasized that violence has no place in democracy. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta described the assault as a cowardly attempt to undermine her commitment to serving the people of Delhi. Despite the attack, she resumed official duties and public engagements within days. The incident is being investigated from multiple angles, with authorities examining the accused's background and possible motives. Two individuals suspected of causing disturbances near a subsequent event attended by the CM were also detained by police.
