Four members of a farming family, including a four-day-old infant, died when the taxi taking them home from Susheela Tiwari Hospital skidded off Rampur Road and plunged into an overflowing canal in Haldwani early on 25 June. The deceased were identified as Rakesh Kumar (32), his mother Kamla Devi (50), sister-in-law Neetu and the newborn boy. The baby’s mother, Rama Devi, brother-in-law Ramesh and driver Shyam Lal were rescued with injuries and admitted to the same hospital. Police said the vehicle lost control on a sharp bend about 400 metres from the hospital amid heavy monsoon rain that had swollen the canal and reduced visibility. Nainital chief fire officer Gaurav Kirar described the rescue as "challenging" because of the swift current; divers and locals worked together to winch the mangled car from the water. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami offered condolences and requested officials to ensure the injured receive full medical care. The accident came as relentless rainfall triggered landslides and other incidents that have killed at least five more people in Uttarakhand over the past two days. Police have opened an investigation into the crash and are reviewing road-safety measures on the stretch.
