Punjab Police have arrested a serving Indian Army sepoy, Gurpreet Singh, and his civilian associate, Sahil Masih, on allegations that they leaked classified military information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence. The men were detained on 22 June by the Amritsar Rural unit after investigators traced suspicious financial transfers to Singh’s associate and recovered two mobile phones that used virtual numbers to communicate with ISI handlers. Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh said the soldier, recruited in 2016 and currently posted in Jammu, exploited his access to defence data and relayed it through pen drives and pre-arranged drop points. According to the police, a Dubai-based drug trafficker named Arjan introduced the pair to ISI operatives about five months ago; the key Pakistani handler has been identified as Rana Javed. Authorities have booked the accused under multiple provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A joint interrogation with federal agencies is under way to map the wider network and trace the flow of money that allegedly financed the espionage. Investigators say further arrests are possible as they probe links between cross-border smuggling rackets and intelligence gathering for Pakistan.
