The Union Cabinet of India has approved the construction of a four-lane highway on the Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram section of National Highway 87 (NH-87) in Tamil Nadu. The project covers a 46.7-kilometer stretch and is estimated to cost ₹1,853 crore. It will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). The new highway aims to ease traffic congestion, enhance connectivity, and boost economic growth and tourism in the region. The route will improve access to key economic, social, and logistics nodes, including pilgrimage destinations such as Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi, and connect five national highways, three state highways, two ports, two railway hubs, and one airport. The project has been endorsed by key government figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Union Minister Amit Shah, highlighting its role in accelerating Tamil Nadu's development and supporting regional prosperity.
