Protests erupted in Jakarta as hundreds of demonstrators attempted to storm Indonesia's parliament building, opposing the legislators' monthly paychecks reportedly amounting to $6,150 and additional allowances. The unrest involved thousands of students, leading to clashes with police who deployed tear gas and detained 15 individuals. The Indonesian Directorate General of Taxes confirmed that income tax for members of the House of Representatives (DPR) and other state officials continues to be paid to the state treasury, refuting claims of tax exemptions. Public scrutiny intensified over DPR members' total earnings, which can reach up to Rp 230 million (approximately $15,000) per month, excluding a housing allowance of Rp 50 million. Officials emphasized that the base salary has remained unchanged for 15 years, with adjustments only in allowances based on government regulations. Some DPR members, including Nafa Urbach of the NasDem faction, pledged to return their salaries and allowances to their constituencies until 2029 to address public criticism. Meanwhile, DPR Deputy Speaker Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal expressed regret over the protests' disruptive nature and acknowledged the parliamentarians' performance has not met public expectations. Additionally, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) intervened to assist minors detained during the demonstrations. Reports also noted that local officials and their drivers were victims of violence amid the unrest.
