Italian prosecutors have opened a vehicular-homicide investigation into Vivian Alexandra Spohr, the 51-year-old wife of Lufthansa Chief Executive Officer Carsten Spohr, after she fatally struck 24-year-old Gaia Costa with a BMW X5 while the victim was on a pedestrian crossing in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, on July 8. Costa, a babysitter from nearby Tempio Pausania, suffered critical head injuries and died at the scene despite 20 minutes of resuscitation efforts. Spohr, who was traveling with her daughter, stopped the vehicle and later tested negative for alcohol and drugs. The SUV has been impounded, and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and witness accounts to reconstruct the collision. Spohr returned to Germany shortly after the incident. In a statement released through her Italian lawyers, she expressed “dismay and deep regret” and said she is fully available to the Tempio Pausania prosecutor’s office. An autopsy on Costa’s body is scheduled for July 16, and no comment has yet been issued by Lufthansa.
