The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) is set to commence with matches hosted across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, starting August 2. The tournament opener takes place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, featuring Tanzania versus Burkina Faso. Kenya's Harambee Stars will make their first appearance on August 3 at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, facing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a two-time CHAN champion. The DRC team has already arrived in Nairobi ahead of the match. Kasarani Stadium and other venues in Kenya have been renovated and prepared for the event, with local organizing committee chair Nicholas Musonye confirming readiness. President William Ruto has played a key role in ensuring stadium readiness and has pledged substantial financial incentives to the Harambee Stars, including 1 million Kenyan shillings per player for each match won and a total of 600 million shillings if the team reaches the final. Security measures have been intensified in Nairobi, with police securing facilities during and after match days, and the Kenya Football Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohamed has urged fans without tickets to avoid Kasarani Stadium during Kenya's opening game. Additionally, several major roads in Nairobi leading to Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums will be closed to facilitate the tournament. Dennis Oliech has been unveiled as Kenya's CHAN ambassador, with the FKF facilitating free league entry for football legends. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is closely monitoring security in Kenya due to recent unrest, emphasizing the importance of safety planning for the championship.
