The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has officially commenced, with matches hosted across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from August 2 to August 30. The tournament opener took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, featuring Tanzania against Burkina Faso at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. Kenya's national team, Harambee Stars, is set to face the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Nairobi at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday. The DRC team, two-time CHAN champions, arrived in Nairobi ahead of the match. Kenya shares Group A with two former CHAN winners, including DRC and Angola, with Angola arriving in Nairobi and considering themselves underdogs. Ahead of the tournament, Kenya's President William Ruto pledged substantial financial incentives to the Harambee Stars, promising Sh1 million (Kenyan shillings) per player for every game won and a total of Sh600 million if the team wins the tournament. He also encouraged Kenyan fans to support the team enthusiastically. Former Harambee Stars striker Dennis Oliech has been named Kenya's CHAN ambassador and has rallied support for the national team. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has urged fans without tickets to stay away from Kasarani Stadium during the opener to ensure security. Security arrangements have been heightened across Nairobi and other host cities, with the government and CAF closely monitoring safety due to recent unrest. Kasarani Stadium received upgrades ahead of the tournament, and FKF plans to facilitate free league entry for football legends. The tournament is expected to run for a month, featuring multiple matches across the three host countries.
