Kericho Governor Erick Mutai is confronting a second impeachment effort in less than a year after Members of the Kericho County Assembly tabled a fresh motion on 7 August. Ward representatives accuse the governor of gross misconduct, including fraudulent payments and an alleged Sh80 million procurement irregularity detailed in an ad-hoc committee report. MCAs say the report shows fictitious payments and advance disbursements that have left the county with more than KSh1 billion in pending bills. In response, Mutai has petitioned President William Ruto to dissolve the entire Kericho County government, arguing that persistent clashes with the assembly have paralysed service delivery since he took office in 2022. The governor maintains that the latest allegations are politically driven, echoing his successful defence against an earlier impeachment bid that stalled in the Senate in October 2024 when proponents failed to secure the required two-thirds majority.
