South Korean actor Song Young Kyu was found unresponsive in a parked car in a residential complex in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, at about 8 a.m. local time on 4 August, according to the Yongin Dongbu Police Station. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers said there were no signs of violence or a suicide note, but they have opened an investigation and are considering an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The 55-year-old performer had been embroiled in a drink-driving case less than two months earlier. Police said he drove roughly five kilometres under the influence on 19 June with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 0.08 percent, the threshold for licence revocation in South Korea. The matter was forwarded to prosecutors, and the controversy led producers to scale back or remove his appearances in several projects. Despite the setback, Song remained a familiar face to audiences after three decades in film, television and theatre. He was best known internationally for playing Chief Choi in the 2019 action-comedy blockbuster “Extreme Job,” one of South Korea’s highest-grossing films, and had more than 40 screen credits since his 1994 debut. Production teams for the currently airing dramas “The Winning Try” on SBS and “The Defects” on ENA expressed condolences and said only limited edits would be made to episodes that feature him. Song had also resigned from a stage production of “Shakespeare in Love” following the June arrest. Police said further details on the investigation will be released once forensic examinations are completed.
