The Mexican Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) has appointed Ángel Cabrera Mendoza as the new president of the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), effective September 1, 2025. Cabrera Mendoza succeeds Jesús de la Fuente, who leaves the CNBV having overseen a record number of Fintech authorizations, albeit after several years. Cabrera Mendoza brings extensive experience in financial regulation, having previously served as coordinator of Banking and Securities at the SHCP. His appointment has received support from prominent figures including Santiago Nieto Castillo and Claudia Sheinbaum. Cabrera will face significant challenges, including addressing allegations of money laundering involving three Mexican banks and managing the financial crisis at the Mexican Agricultural Mutual Insurance Company (CAME). The CNBV presidency change occurs amid a critical period for Mexico's financial system, with priorities on innovation and anti-money laundering measures. Additionally, Armando Herrera, formerly of Konfío, will become CEO of Nu México starting September 2, 2025. Meanwhile, liquidity remains the primary factor influencing Mexican companies' demand for bank credit.
