Mexico’s opposition National Action Party filed a criminal complaint with the federal attorney-general’s office on Monday demanding an investigation into Vector Casa de Bolsa, the brokerage owned by businessman Alfonso Romo, for alleged money laundering on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel. Romo served as chief of staff to former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador between 2018 and 2020. The move follows a June 25 notice from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network that identified Vector, CiBanco and Intercam as channels used to launder more than US$180 million linked to several drug-trafficking organizations. PAN lawmakers said the Treasury’s findings indicate the transactions occurred while Romo held a senior post in the López Obrador administration and called for the former president to be questioned. PAN legislators also cited domestic records suggesting Vector transferred 30 million pesos to a relative of a senator from the ruling Morena party, arguing that the payment underscores the need for a swift probe. The attorney-general’s office has not yet commented, and neither Romo nor López Obrador has issued a public response.
