Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has asked Congress to confirm Maria del Carmen Bonilla as deputy finance minister, filling a position that has been vacant since Edgar Amador Zamora was promoted to head the Finance Ministry in March. If ratified, Bonilla would become only the second woman to hold the powerful No. 2 post at the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP). Bonilla currently runs the ministry’s Public Credit and International Affairs Unit, where she recently oversaw a US$12 billion structured-note offering aimed at easing funding pressures on state oil company Petróleos Mexicanos. A graduate in corporate finance and banking from Universidad Anáhuac, she previously worked at the Mexican Social Security Institute and in banking roles at HSBC and Santander. Sheinbaum also proposed Omar Reyes Colmenares, a former security official, to lead the Financial Intelligence Unit, replacing Pablo Gómez. Lawmakers on the Permanent Commission are expected to decide on the timetable for confirmation hearings this week.
