A senior defense official said Kruse "will no longer serve" in the post, and his deputy, Christine Bordine, is expected to act in the role while a permanent successor is chosen. The firing comes two months after details leaked of a preliminary DIA assessment of the June 22 U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities. The classified report concluded the operation had set Tehran’s nuclear program back only a few months, contradicting President Donald Trump’s public claim that the sites had been “completely and fully obliterated.” Hegseth and the White House had sharply criticized the analysis; the Pentagon cited a “loss of confidence” in Kruse’s leadership. Kruse’s ouster is part of a wider shake-up of senior national-security ranks. Reuters reported that Hegseth the same day also removed Vice Adm. Nancy Lacore, chief of the Navy Reserve, and Rear Adm. Milton Sands, commander of Naval Special Warfare Command. The moves follow earlier dismissals this year of the National Security Agency director, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and several other four-star officers. Democratic lawmakers warned the action risks politicizing intelligence. Senate Intelligence Committee vice-chair Mark Warner said the pattern of removals suggests the administration is treating analysis "as a loyalty test rather than a safeguard for the country." The Pentagon has not announced an inquiry into the Iran strike assessment, and no timeline has been given for naming a permanent DIA director.
