Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement warned on Saturday that it will attack U.S. naval and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait if Washington supports Israeli military operations against Iran. The threat was delivered in a televised statement by the group’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, and was confirmed by multiple news agencies, including Reuters and The Associated Press. Saree said Houthi forces are "monitoring all hostile movements" and would "not hesitate to strike American ships and warships" should the United States join Israel’s campaign. The Houthis, who control northern and western Yemen, have previously used drones and anti-ship missiles to disrupt traffic in the waterway, a corridor that carries an estimated 15 percent of global maritime trade. The warning jeopardises a U.S.–Houthi cease-fire brokered by Oman in May, which prompted both sides to halt attacks on each other after months of strikes on Red Sea shipping and U.S. air raids on Houthi targets in Yemen. The group framed its new threat as support for Tehran, saying any American participation in Israeli strikes "cannot be ignored." Tensions across the region have risen since Israel carried out rare attacks on Iranian nuclear and military sites last week, drawing retaliatory fire from Iran. President Donald Trump has said he will decide within two weeks whether the United States will commit forces to the confrontation, raising concerns among shipping operators about renewed disruptions on one of the world’s busiest sea lanes.
