Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories and the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday released a series of audio recordings of telephone conversations with Gaza residents who say Hamas fighters opened fire on civilians gathered at humanitarian aid distribution points. The residents claim the shootings were staged to make it appear that Israeli soldiers were responsible. According to the testimonies, the alleged tactic is intended to sow panic, block deliveries organised by the U.S.–backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and shift international blame onto the Israel Defense Forces. One caller is heard stating, “This is how Hamas operates—they deliberately fire at people and want it to look as though the army is shooting so no one will approach the aid distribution areas.” Israeli officials said the recordings add to evidence that Hamas is deliberately obstructing relief efforts in the enclave. Local medical sources cited by regional media put the death toll from violence around distribution centres at more than 400 since late May. Hamas has not publicly responded to the latest allegations.
