Israel’s military and domestic intelligence agency said they killed Fadl Abu al-Ata, the commander of Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Shejaiya sector in Gaza City, during an airstrike carried out on 7 June. The operation, revealed on 11 July, was conducted jointly by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security service. The agencies described Abu al-Ata as a key planner of the 7 October 2024 cross-border assault on southern Israel and said he had overseen subsequent attacks on Israeli troops inside Gaza. They added that the strike also killed Hamad Kamel Abd al-Aziz Iyad, identified as Islamic Jihad’s chief engineer for the nearby Turukman area. The killing removes a senior field commander from Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s ranks as Israel’s campaign in Gaza continues. Neither the militant group nor Gaza health officials immediately commented on the Israeli announcement.
