An overnight Israeli airstrike hit the densely populated Al-Shati (Beach) refugee camp in northern Gaza, killing at least eight Palestinians and wounding about 30 others, according to local medical sources cited by EFE and Al Jazeera. Witnesses said the attack levelled two adjacent homes belonging to the Jouda family; rescue teams were still searching the rubble early Wednesday. Reports from the scene indicated that two children were among the dead. The strike came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks in Washington on a possible cease-fire, while indirect negotiations between Israeli and Hamas delegations continued in Doha. Despite the diplomacy, Israeli forces have pressed their offensive across the enclave and now claim "operational control" over roughly 65 % of Gaza, the army’s chief spokesman Effie Defrin said. Defrin added that troops have killed more than 1,300 suspected militants since mid-March. Gaza’s Health Ministry puts the death toll from Israel’s campaign at more than 57,500 people, most of them women and children, since the war erupted after Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attacks. Overnight strikes were also reported in central and southern Gaza, adding at least four more fatalities, according to hospital records.
