Israeli forces opened fire on crowds near aid distribution points in Gaza on Sunday, killing at least 19 people, 14 of whom were waiting for humanitarian assistance, according to medical staff in the enclave. Separate hospital tallies put the day’s overall death toll from Israeli strikes and gunfire as high as 57. The Gaza Ministry of Health said hospitals admitted 119 bodies and treated 866 wounded over the previous 24 hours, bringing the death toll since 7 October 2023 to 60,839, with 149,588 injured. The humanitarian crisis is deepening. Health officials reported six additional deaths from starvation and malnutrition in the past day, raising the famine-related toll to 175, including 93 children. Fuel shortages continue to cripple hospital operations, although Egyptian state television said two trucks carrying 107 tons of diesel were poised to cross into the territory in a rare delivery. Several countries stepped up aid operations. Jordan’s military carried out seven airdrops that unloaded 61 tons of food and relief supplies over Gaza with support from the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany and Belgium; Brussels confirmed the Belgian Air Force’s first drop. Separately, the UAE said an 11-truck convoy delivered about 65 tons of medicines to World Health Organization warehouses, while roughly 20 additional Emirati relief trucks entered through the Rafah crossing. Regional militaries also reported nine cargo aircraft sorties to air-drop food parcels, adding to UN-coordinated deliveries that agencies say remain far below the volumes needed to avert famine. Aid groups warn that escalating violence around distribution hubs risks further civilian casualties and hampers efforts to get supplies to the 2.3 million people trapped in the enclave.
