Over 50 children DIED of malnourishment in Gaza amidst intensified Israeli siege — UNRWA regional director Juliette Touma She adds 'very very litte supplies' are being allowed into enclave, leading to widespread starvation amongst civilians - particularly children https://t.co/qikbqdztjG
Child hunger in the Gaza Strip has reached its worst level since Israel tightened its blockade in March, United Nations agencies told the Security Council this week. UNRWA said screenings of nearly 16,000 children under five in June found that 10.2% were acutely malnourished, almost double the 5.5% recorded in March. UNICEF separately reported 5,870 malnutrition cases last month—an increase of about 180% from February—while UNRWA regional director Juliette Touma warned that more than 50 children have already died from starvation. UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher described the humanitarian situation as “unspeakable,” noting that food stocks are collapsing, civilians searching for supplies risk live fire and up to five newborns are having to share a single incubator. The enclave’s health system is operating with only 17 of 36 hospitals partially functional and 70% of essential medicines out of stock. Fuel deliveries remain capped at two trucks a day, while an average of just 69 aid trucks enter Gaza daily—far below the several hundred the UN says are required to sustain its 2 million residents. The crisis unfolds amid continuing Israeli airstrikes. Gaza’s Health Ministry said 93 people were killed and 278 injured in the past 24 hours, bringing the overall death toll since October 2023 to more than 58,400. UN officials reiterated calls for immediate, unimpeded humanitarian access and reminded Israel of its obligations under the Geneva Conventions to ensure food and medical care for civilians in territory it occupies.
