An Israeli airstrike late Sunday hit a tent used by reporters outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, killing prominent Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif and at least three other staff members, the Qatar-based network said. Local medical officials reported six to seven total fatalities. Al Jazeera identified the other slain journalists as correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal; a fifth colleague, Moamen Aliwa, was also reported dead by several outlets. The Israel Defense Forces acknowledged conducting what it called a “precise” strike, saying it intentionally targeted al-Sharif, whom it accused of leading a Hamas anti-tank cell and “posing” as a journalist. The military did not address the deaths of the other media workers or present supporting evidence. Al Jazeera condemned the attack as a deliberate assassination and denied any militant affiliation, noting that the strike came after weeks of public accusations by Israeli officials against its Gaza bureau. Press-freedom advocates, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, had recently warned that al-Sharif faced heightened danger amid an online campaign portraying him as a combatant. The latest deaths push the number of journalists killed in Gaza since Israel’s 2023 offensive to well above 200, according to media-rights groups, underscoring the conflict’s heavy toll on local reporters. The incident occurred hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would permit more foreign media access to the enclave under military escort.
