An Israeli missile struck a water distribution point in the Nuseirat refugee camp on 13 July, killing at least eight people—six of them children—and wounding more than a dozen others, according to Gaza health officials. The victims had been queueing to fill containers amid severe water shortages. Israel’s military said the round was aimed at an Islamic Jihad operative but fell "dozens of metres" from its intended target because of a technical malfunction. The incident is under review, the Israel Defense Forces added. Gaza’s Government Media Office said the attack was the latest in what it calls a "systematic war of thirst." The office claims Israeli forces have carried out 112 strikes on water collection points, killing more than 700 Palestinians, mostly children, and destroying 720 wells since October 2023. The damage has left an estimated 1.25 million residents without reliable access to clean water. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and UNICEF warn that fuel restrictions and damaged infrastructure have shut down most desalination and sanitation facilities, creating "devastating" public-health risks. Reports from Gaza City describe rising cases of diarrhoea, skin infections and other water-borne diseases. The latest strike comes as Gaza’s health ministry puts the overall death toll from the nine-month war at more than 58,000, with negotiations on a proposed 60-day cease-fire stalled in Doha.
