Netflix has locked the core cast for “Roommates,” an ensemble college comedy to be directed by Canadian filmmaker Chandler Levack. Saturday Night Live performer Sarah Sherman will star alongside Natasha Lyonne, Nick Kroll, Sadie Sandler, Chloe East and Emmy winner Storm Reid in the streaming platform’s latest original feature. Written by SNL writers Jimmy Fowlie and Ceara O’Sullivan, the script follows Devon, an idealistic freshman who convinces the self-assured Celeste to share a dorm room, only for their fast friendship to spiral into a war of passive aggression. Production and release details have not yet been disclosed, but the project expands Netflix’s pipeline of youth-focused comedies. Levack drew critical notice with her 2022 debut “I Like Movies” and recently completed the Montreal-set romantic comedy “Mile End Kicks.” Her move to a larger-scale studio production signals Netflix’s ongoing strategy of pairing emerging filmmakers with ensemble casts that can attract both younger viewers and established comedy fans.
