Lena Dunham has returned to episodic television for the first time in seven years with “Too Much,” a 10-episode romantic comedy that began streaming globally on Netflix on 10 July. The show, co-created with her musician husband Luis Felber, follows a New Yorker who decamps to London after a break-up and falls for a struggling guitarist. Megan Stalter (“Hacks”) and Will Sharpe (“The White Lotus”) star in the series, which draws loosely on Dunham’s own move to the U.K. and courtship with Felber. Early critical reaction has been favourable. Review aggregators list the programme as “certified fresh” with an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, while outlets including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter praised Dunham’s dialogue and Stalter’s lead performance. The project extends a recent run of activity for the 39-year-old writer-director, who spent the interim period focusing on films such as “Sharp Stick” and “Catherine Called Birdy.” Ahead of the launch, Dunham addressed two long-running flashpoints from her career. She said she stepped back from acting roles after finding the scrutiny of her appearance “merciless,” a decision that helped her concentrate on writing and directing. She also acknowledged that the predominantly white casting of her HBO breakthrough “Girls” was “really disappointing” to many viewers, adding that “Too Much” aims to showcase a broader range of voices on and off screen. Dunham has not ruled out revisiting her earlier work, saying a “Girls” spinoff could happen under the right circumstances. For now, she is gauging audience response to “Too Much” and has expressed interest in a second season if Netflix orders one.

Will Sharpe on the ‘Too Much’ finale: “I remember Lena being like, ‘We need to somehow just undercut the ‘happily ever after,’ because obviously who knows how it’s going to go. So let’s enjoy the moment, but with a little wink.’” https://t.co/WWwf8DGZoF
