Sony Pictures has commissioned Aaron Sorkin to write and direct “The Social Network Part II,” a follow-up to the 2010 drama that chronicled Facebook’s founding. The project marks Sorkin’s first return to the material since winning an Oscar for the original screenplay. Sorkin’s new script draws on the Wall Street Journal’s 2021 investigative series “The Facebook Files,” which revealed internal documents describing the platform’s role in spreading misinformation, influencing the 2020 U.S. election and harming adolescent mental health. The film will explore those findings as well as violence linked to Facebook outside the United States, according to people familiar with the development. The picture is being produced by Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser and is still in early development. Casting has not been set, and it remains unclear whether Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his portrayal of Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. David Fincher’s 2010 original earned $226 million worldwide and won three Academy Awards. Sorkin’s directing résumé now includes “Molly’s Game,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Being the Ricardos,” giving the screenwriter added experience as he prepares to helm the sequel.
