Karachi has experienced continuous heavy and intermittent rains since August 19, 2025, resulting in widespread urban flooding that has severely disrupted city infrastructure and traffic flow. Key roads including University Road and Shahrah-e-Faisal were submerged, causing traffic jams and difficulties for residents. The city's drainage system failed to manage the water accumulation, leading to prolonged waterlogging in many areas. The heavy rains have caused multiple accidents and incidents of electrocution, resulting in at least 15 deaths. Power outages and damage to roads, including newly constructed ones, have further compounded the situation. On August 21, a massive explosion occurred at a fireworks warehouse on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi's Saddar area, injuring 28 people and killing five. The blast caused a fire that damaged a nearby girls' school and led to extensive rescue operations. The injured included the factory owner. Authorities have registered a case regarding the explosion. Efforts to control the fire were successful by the afternoon of August 21. The Met Office predicts that Karachi will continue to receive rainfall intermittently until at least August 23, with further heavy rains expected from August 24 onward. The ongoing monsoon rains have also affected other parts of Sindh and Pakistan, including Hyderabad and Islamabad, with flooding reported along the Sutlej River and other regions. Local officials and media have criticized administrative failures and poor infrastructure maintenance as contributing factors to the scale of the flooding and damage in Karachi.
