Google has begun rolling out a package of updates intended to make its Gemini AI assistant both more personal and more private. The headline addition, called “Personal Context,” allows Gemini to remember key details from a user’s past conversations and use them to tailor future responses. The setting is enabled by default, but users can turn it off at any time in the app’s menu. For sessions that users prefer to keep separate, the company introduced “Temporary Chats.” Conversations launched in this mode are excluded from history, are not used to train Google’s models, and disappear from the interface after 72 hours, although they are briefly retained on Google’s servers to process replies and feedback. The features debut today on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model for consumer accounts in select countries, with broader availability—including the lighter 2.5 Flash model and additional regions such as the EEA, U.K. and Switzerland—promised in the coming weeks. Google is also renaming the existing “Gemini Apps Activity” data toggle to “Keep Activity,” which remains off for users who previously opted out. The moves bring Gemini closer to the cross-chat memory and incognito modes already offered by rival chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT while giving users new data-control options.
