Autonomous-driving company WeRide said it has secured a strategic equity investment from Southeast Asian super-app Grab as part of a broader partnership to commercialise Level-4 robotaxis and autonomous shuttles in the region. The investment, whose value was not disclosed, is expected to close by the first half of 2026, subject to customary conditions. Under the agreement, WeRide will integrate its self-driving technology with Grab’s ride-hailing platform and fleet-management systems to optimise dispatch, routing and remote monitoring. The companies aim to deploy thousands of robotaxis in phases, with timing aligned to local regulations and market readiness. They will also offer training programmes to help interested Grab driver-partners transition to roles such as remote vehicle supervisors and fleet technicians. The deal expands on a memorandum of understanding signed in March 2025 and is intended to address persistent driver shortages in fast-growing Southeast Asian cities while bolstering Grab’s mobility services. WeRide operates in more than 30 cities worldwide and holds autonomous-driving permits in six jurisdictions, positioning the Guangzhou-based company to supply vehicles tailored to the region’s traffic conditions.
