Amazon MGM Studios is developing a live-action television series based on the long-running “Wolfenstein” video-game franchise for its Prime Video streaming service, according to multiple trade reports led by Variety. Patrick Somerville, best known for HBO’s “Station Eleven,” will create, write and serve as showrunner. Kilter Films’ Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy and Athena Wickham—producers of Amazon’s successful “Fallout” adaptation—will executive produce alongside James Altman of Keyframe Films and Jerk Gustafsson of MachineGames, the current developer of the games. The project’s official logline reads, “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen,” but additional plot details have not been disclosed. First released in 1981 with “Castle Wolfenstein,” the franchise helped popularize first-person shooters and now spans 14 titles, most recently 2019’s VR entry “Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot.” Bethesda Softworks, a Microsoft subsidiary, publishes the series. The new show extends Amazon’s push into video-game intellectual property. Prime Video has already renewed “Fallout” through a third season and is developing separate series based on “Mass Effect,” “God of War” and “Warhammer 40,000.”
