Egils Helmanis, mayor of the Latvian town of Ogre and chairman of its municipal council, was wounded on 16 July while delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine, according to municipal spokesman Patriks Grīva and Latvian public broadcaster LSM. Helmanis had brought around 20 vehicles and other supplies for the Ukrainian Armed Forces when Russian shelling struck the area he was visiting. He was taken to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The trip was the latest in a series of missions Helmanis has undertaken since 2022 to support Ukraine. Latvia, a NATO and EU member, has been a consistent backer of Kyiv, pledging annual military aid equal to 0.25 % of its GDP and recently sending 1,500 combat drones.
